Equipment for a 24 Hours

Equipment

Everything (or almost) you should carry with you…  A transfer for a 24h takes pretty long time, if you want to organize it properly.

Usually, unless you happen to live close to the location of the race, it is advisable to arrive on Friday, so you are supposed to carry with you enough stuff to live on for three day.

You’d better write down a list, and a check list to be sure not to forget anything, no matter if you are in a team ora alone, and do not underestimate your needs! First of all: technical equipment.

Your mountain bike must be ready for the race, take care of it in time! No Mtb, no 24h!

Check every part of it, especially those liable to have suffered harm or aging.

Take all the equipment to replace damaged parts and whatever you may need to repair it.

Air tubes, all you can, 1 or 2 tires, a pump, 2 or 3 flanks, paper, ropes, brushes, a chain, a saddle, fenders in case of rain or mud, whatever can be broken and a spare bicycle, if you have it.

For night races it is mandatory to have a proper light. It is very convenient to have an extra one, no matter if cheaper than the one you plan to use. It is advisable, as well, to use the back red light (in many 24h it is compulsory), and the light on your forehead, to have a better view.

This all implies batteries enough for a night, plus some extra, just in cases… and one more, c’mon! If you don’t have your lights yet, or you are wondering how is the best saddle for a 24h, check here!

As for the accommodation, it just depends on how you want to live your 24h of mountain bike.

Some prefer to arrive at the Campus with a camper, some others with extra-comfort tents, bigger than apartments, others with small ones, and some others just sleep in their cars.

One thing is for sure: a Gazebo is always needed. It’s the place where you will spend most of your time, eating, chatting, and meddling with your Mtb.
You may find different kind of Gazebo, with pretty different prices, from very cheap one, for few euros, ready in 10 minutes, to expensive ones, ready in 10 seconds.
Many carry electric generators, as well, for the lights at night, because usually the Campus is settled in a field or a park, and it is very unlikely to have an electric network.

You should at least have a light for night time. You may happen to see gazebos with professional coffee machines and huge refrigerators. In a 24h may happen anything, and even more!

Whatever you chose as accommodation, some camping stuff, such as a couple of chairs and a table, may be very useful, to relax.

Of course your provision of food must be made in advance, according to what you think it is suitable for yourself (see training). If you need something warm, all the 24h always provide open kitchens from Friday on, with free pasta for the racer during the whole race.
This is one of the excess of an exceptional event: in the Campus there may be enormous boiling pots for mega-pastas and grills cooking any meat any hour.
In your bag, btw, try and put everything possible: shorts and t-shirts are never enough, or are enough with sunshine, but still, in such a case, they won’t bother. On the other side, in case it rains cats and dogs, they will be blessed. Winter stuff is welcomed. Although in spring, at night it may be cold. Accessories can make the difference: gloves with or without fingers, under-helmet, caps, socks, shoes and covers, K-way, dark glasses, yellow or transparent in the circumstances of rain at night.

The refreshing towels are extremely useful, as well as creams on the saddle for Solo riders, and whatever may be necessary for your shower: (slippers!!!!), bathrobe, a pair of small towels, and what you need for your hygiene. Do not forget – to close your luggage/bag – a change of “civil” clothes.
Showers are always available, sometimes they are in dedicated zones, with containers held there for the event, and sometimes they happen to be within close by buildings (tourist or sport structures). If you want to know which companies produce special shorts for Endurance, click here!

With these few lines we tried to help those who face a 24h for the first time, and those who always forget something, like ME!

This is not meant to be a Full description of all you may need, it’s just a nutshell of information. If you think we missed something very important, let us know, get in touch!
